Ranpak optimises packing process at book distribution centre
A leading UK book distributor, based in the South of England, has been using up to 20 FillPak TT machines since 2006 but in 2011 needed to introduce an automated, integrated system to manage increased throughput on the busiest line.
The Challenge
With more business coming through the line during Q4 2010, its existing end of line set up was unable to work fast enough. It was felt the process needed to be speeded up to avoid backlogs on the line, while still maintaining cost savings. The challenge was to find a packaging system which would allow them to pack in excess of up to 4000 boxes per day.
The Solution
The Accufill void fill system provided the perfect solution as it was able to manage the amount of paper that was being put into boxes, combined with the right volume of void fill, so the incentive was less paper, and therefore less cost, with the reassurance the products were still receiving enough protection.
Working with the existing FillPak converter, Accufill automatically scans the size of the box and the contents to calculate the optimum amount of void fill required, no matter what the box size. This meant the operator did not have to worry about over or under filling and could perform quickly and efficiently, filling up to 12 boxes per minute.
Why they chose a Ranpak paper system
The Project Manager commented “We have been using FillPak paper to protect books during shipment for several years so we were already confident in its performance as a packaging material. By combining this with the Accufill system we should start to see major improvements in efficiency in a very short period of time.”
He concluded “We have been particularly impressed with the installation of the Accufill system by Ranpak’s engineering team, which was undertaken with minimum disruption to our busy warehouse.”
